ABOUT the XL Catlin Art Prize
The XL Catlin Art Prize is a new juried art contest and traveling exhibition of 40 two-dimensional figurative works (paintings, drawings, and original prints.) The contest launches this fall through press, social media and direct institutional outreach.
The XL Catlin Art Prize in the US builds on a 10-year legacy of the XL Catlin Art Prize in the UK which recognized young artists through a prestigious London exhibition and catalog publication. The prize established a reputation as an insightful overview of emerging talent.
XL Catlin is a major global insurance and reinsurance company, insuring some of the world’s most acclaimed galleries, art collections and dealers. The company is an established supporter of the arts and has supported projects focusing on emerging artists in Britain and the United States.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-granting program, either as an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in art at a U.S. school. Alumni are ineligible for participation.

Strategic Advisory Board
Representatives from a group of leading art schools throughout the US was assembled to form a Strategic Advisory Board. Each institution has appointed a Regional Juror to participate in the XL Catlin Art Prize jury
process and has supported the XL Catlin Art Prize within their communities.
The competition is structured around three rounds of jurying:
The US has been divided into five regions for the prize: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest, and West. Regional Jurors from the Strategic Advisory Board will rate all submissions from their region on a scale of 1 to 5. Upon completion, regional submissions will be presented to the Exhibition Jury.
A four-person Exhibition Jury consisting of prominent members of the art world will review and rate the top 50% of all submissions and select 40 works to comprise the exhibition. Finalists for the exhibition will be notified and posted online.
Three prominent artists will review submissions and determine the 1st and 2nd place winners.
An Audience Award will be determined through social media.
